Akela is a Two-Skinned wolf and a pivotal supporting character in Book 1. Originally fleeing the subjugation of a corrupted pack leader, she inadvertently intercepts Jason Archer during a severe magically-enhanced storm. Recognizing Jason's latent two-skinned nature, she acts as his primary guide to shifting and understanding the duality of his existence. Through their shared survival and Jason's unintentional use of True Naming, she is freed from her former bindings. Background
Before the main events of Book 1, Akela lived in a village alongside approximately thirty other Two-Skinned wolves. Following the decline of their aging pack leader, the aggressive wolf Yeruslan seized control. Yeruslan discovered and abused the True Naming of his packmates, forcing them into subjugation and compelling them to commit terrible acts against their will. Unwilling to endure this abuse, Akela and her wolf consciousness, Yiska, fled the pack and lived as rogues in the wild. She survived independently until a severe magical storm forced her to seek shelter in a mountain cave, where she detected the scent of an unrecognized two-skinned individual who had recently passed through.
